Pokémon TCG 30th Celebration: Release Date, Cards & New Rarity

The Pokémon TCG turns 30 with 30th Celebration — the first-ever simultaneous worldwide release (Sept 16, 2026), an all-foil set, a guaranteed Pikachu in every pack, and a brand-new Futuristic Rare rarity.

The Pokémon Trading Card Game is turning 30, and The Pokémon Company is marking the milestone with a set unlike anything it has done before. Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration launches on September 16, 2026 — and it arrives with a historic first, an entirely new rarity, and a guaranteed foil in every single pack.

Here's everything that's been confirmed so far.

A historic first: one global release date

For the first time ever, a Pokémon TCG expansion will release simultaneously worldwide. Normally Japan gets sets months ahead of the English market, but 30th Celebration drops everywhere on the same day — September 16, 2026. For collectors used to importing Japanese product or waiting on English localizations, this is a genuinely big deal.

The new rarity: Futuristic Rare

The headline of the set is a brand-new rarity called the Futuristic Rare. The first two cards to carry it are Mewtwo ex and Mew ex, both illustrated by acclaimed Japanese artist YOSHIROTTEN, whose work trades the usual painterly card art for a bold, iridescent "future" aesthetic.

Both are full-art, Psychic-type cards: Mewtwo ex packs 230 HP with Photon Bullets and Psychic Powers, while Mew ex runs 160 HP with the Memory Helix Ability — letting it copy the attacks of any of your Benched Pokémon — plus Teleportation Burst. Look closely and you'll spot the little "30" Pikachu stamp that marks every card in the set.

These will almost certainly be the rarest pulls in the set — but rarity and popularity aren't the same thing, and on that front the community is split. The Futuristic Rare's bold, abstract, neon-and-chrome look is a sharp break from the painterly art collectors have come to love on alt-arts and special illustration rares, and reactions have been genuinely mixed. Some collectors love the daring, modern direction and see these as instant grails; others find the style cold or "AI-looking" and aren't sure it has the lasting, nostalgic appeal that drives long-term value. In other words: extremely scarce and the clear chase cards of the set, but whether they become beloved icons or a divisive experiment is still an open question.

Every card is foil — even the Energy

There are no non-holo cards in 30th Celebration. Every card is foil, all the way down to the Basic Energy. It's the kind of premium, all-shiny treatment the TCG normally reserves for special sub-sets, applied to an entire mainline expansion.

A guaranteed Pikachu in every pack

Each booster pack is guaranteed to include one of 30 different Pikachu cards, every one with a unique illustration. The featured artists include legendary names like Atsuko Nishida (the original designer of Pikachu) alongside Yuu Nishida and OKACHEKE. Collecting all 30 Pikachu will be a chase in itself.

30 classic reprints with the "30" stamp

In the spirit of the 2021 Celebrations set, 30th Celebration includes a run of classic cards pulled from across the game's 30-year history, each given foil treatment and a special "30" Pikachu stamp. The marquee reprint is the one everyone wants — the Base Set Charizard by Mitsuhiro Arita — joined by tag-team era favorites like Pikachu & Zekrom-GX.

These reprints are not legal in the Standard format — they're here purely for the nostalgia and the collection. If the Base Set Charizard has you reaching for your binder, our original Base Set page and the classic Charizard card are a fun trip back to where it all started.

New ex cards and illustration rares

Beyond the classics, the set brings new playable cards too. Confirmed additions include Greninja ex and Sylveon ex, plus a strong lineup of illustration rares featuring fan favorites like Espeon, Umbreon, Lapras, Drifloon, Zorua, and Lycanroc. These borderless, full-art illustration rares are where a lot of the set's everyday collecting appeal lives — gorgeous scenes that put the Pokémon in a world rather than a spotlight.

How big is the set?

The main set is 128 cards, expanding to roughly 150–158 once the secret rares, Futuristic Rares, and the classic collection are counted. With an all-foil print run and a guaranteed Pikachu per pack, this is shaping up to be one of the most collector-focused releases in years.

Should you preorder?

Anniversary sets run hot, and an all-foil set with a new rarity and a Base Set Charizard reprint is going to run very hot. Preorders weren't live at announcement, but Pokémon Center is expected to get them first, with major retailers following. If you want sealed product at retail rather than scalper prices, watch for preorder drops and be ready to move.

In the meantime, if you want to scratch the pack-opening itch right now, our Pokemon 151 Pack Opening game lets you rip virtual boosters with real pull rates — and if you're thinking about selling older cards to fund your 30th Celebration boxes, our guide to selling Pokémon cards walks through how to get the most for your collection.

We'll update this page as more cards, products, and preorder details are revealed ahead of the September 16 launch.
